3D Animation "Thinking Character"

Final assignment for 3D Animation, a character acting and lip synced to a voice clip. I just used one of the sample clips, from Dumb & Dumber and the rig is Koko. I didn't mess with the ears or tail on this rig, I have no idea how they work. :x

Action Analysis Rough Story Reel

So begins work on the Action Analysis assignment! This is a 30 second story and in final it will have a few seconds of complete animation as well as a finished layout/painting.

This is a rough pass story reel with scratch track (from Paper Mario!), sfx and dialogue.

The summer always seems to disappear when you don't want it to, huh? Glad to be back in the groove though, we got 3rd year Animation rolling in now and I'm pretty damn excited. :] Goals this year include draw a LOT more than I have been and do more sketching... so I got started! Some Final 2nd Year Stuff

Preparing for my Anime North table last month left little time to post some of my final work from this year, so here it is now.

For my final character design assignment I used my Egyptian pharaoh character, Ananu in a 6 drawing sequence of discovery!

Here are some highlights from my TV storyboards featuring the same Egyptian characters.

And lastly, an opening shot pan for Layout that was painted in Photoshop, again with the pen tool. I've come to enjoy using that!

That's it for year 2! Year 3 awaits in September! In the meantime, I'm preparing some portfolio pieces. Stay tuned!

Sound clip is from Donnie Darko. Done entirely in Flash. I didn't get a chance to finish cleanup on this, although I'd like to. I'd also like to fix the whole animation up a lot, I'm not that satisfied with it.

Themed Characters: Ancient Egypt

We had to come up with 4 time-period themed characters that will roll over for storyboard and layout assignments. I love ancient Egypt so I had to choose it, even though I figured everyone would choose it (doesn't seem like they have though!)

I designed this guy based on pictures of Egyptian crocodile statues I found

I read during my research of ancient Egypt that the higher status you were, the more transparent your clothes are. I made Kanila's dress transparent for this reason, also to give her some sexy OOMPH.

This guy turned out to be my favorite, based on Anubis, the god of death obviously.

Bidi is an ibis, which I found out were revered birds in Egypt because of their connection with the ibis headed god of scripture Thoth.

Oops! I haven't posted my character designs for the muzzle and beak animation yet. Consider that fixed now. I did a 'New Guinea' theme with a cassowary and sugar glider character.

DKC Bestiary Art Book - preview sketches

These are sketches for an art project that's been ongoing since December. I plan to make a bestiary art book of every enemy, animal buddy and boss from the 3 Donkey Kong Country games on the SNES. I decided to do this simply because I'm a huge fan of the games. The book will be in full color and contain all art by myself. As well as offered for free download when complete (donations accepted/appreciated), I'd like to print physical copies too. Please share with all the DKC fans! :)

Expressions Change When You Make Them

This is my expression change assignment, which consists of 4 expressions for a male and female character based on IRL people we've drawn as caricatures.

SO, here's my lovely man Clive looking proud of himself, very angry, guilty and exhausted.

ALSO, I drew my friend Ashley for the female sheet. I don't think I captured her quite as well as Clive but *shrug* I just had to FACE the fact.... (I'm not sorry.)

Walk & Run Animation

Contrasting characters for a Character Design assignment, designed for the walk & run animation. I decided to spruce up the sheets I did of them both digitally. There's things in both sheets I'd definitely fix if I did another pass over them both, like strengthening expressions and consistency.

Royal Winter Fair: Life Drawings

Here are some animal drawings, all done obnoxiously lightly in col-erase (which is why I had to take photos of most of them for them to show up, hence the hodgepodged collections). Next time I'll draw darker!

Also below is a study of a mouse deer skeleton. I couldn't find good references for the muscles so they're not very accurate.

I have other life drawings lying around but they're quite large and for me to scan them would be *yawn*.... too much. |3 Zzzzzzz (it's 12:38 and I'm tired)

Interior Painting: An Inside Job

Our second painting assignment of the year was an interior so I took the layout I did for Layout and painted that.
Another Zelda-themed painting because I was listening to the Link To The Past soundtrack and wanted to draw a similar scene like in Link's house around waking up in the night to find a letter... the theme was ANXIETY. What does the letter say? OOoooOOOooo~

Final painting was done rather quickly considering my usual painting speed... about 3.5 hours. Done in watercolor.

The bottom one is my favorite. It definitely turned out the best. The first two I'd need to try again... haha. I'd just watched the Triplets of Belleville again so I'm sure that had something to do with the nose...

Weight, Lift & Toss Animation

Woo! Second animation of the year done!
This is my weight, lift and toss assignment. The character needs to pick up a heavy object and toss it. I used my gator character, Zagser for this, though he's a simplified model here compared to my character model sheet of him. I took the spines out so I didn't have to animate those. The object is a giant pill bug :3

I didn't want to get too nit-picky with this one because of time constraints. I might revisit this and make it a little better sometime.

Sorry for the quality. I drew everything too big and had to shoot it on two pieces of paper... watch in 480p for best quality.

First Painting of the Year

My first painting assignment this year was an exterior. I'm so glad we were allowed a lot more freedom with media and style this time. Done in watercolor and colored pencil. I'm not terribly enthused about the finished piece... If you think this looks familiar well you're right. It's the Southern Swamp boat tour center from Majora's Mask.

Wave Boat Sack Animation

First Animation assignment of 2nd year DONE. I'm not particularly proud of this... but I got it done on time. Instead of a boat, I made the sack ride a dead fish. The wave caused many frustrations and so did getting things to sync correctly... but I believe if I did it properly the first time it wouldn't be an issue. OH WELL.

Lift & Toss Character Design

Here's my character model and pose sheet for my Weight Lift & Toss animation assignment. The character is Zagser, I drew him in my sketchbook not too long ago. I threw some color and stuff on it because the blandness of white paper was bothering me.

I'm hoping my design is relatively easy for me and won't cause too many headaches. I'm worried about the tail and spines. I had a hard enough time drawing it properly haha. I foresee frustration in the studio...

"My Father" & "The Leader" Story Beats

These are two poems interpreted into beat boards for Storyboarding class. The boards are rough and only one story will be put into final storyboard.Here's my first one, "The Leader" which I used the story of Moses for.

Here's my second one, "My Father." For this I decided to reverse the characters and make the dad a human and the son a wolf, so he's still alienated in species but not in the way the poem intends.

I'm thinking of going to final with "My Father" so I don't have to deal with the crowd of Hebrews in "The Leader" :S For now it's still undecided. I'll post more work on this in the near future. :)

Solronté Returns & New Sketchbook Sketches

Here's Solronté (the sketch from my last post) in color! I decided on warm colors and grays you'd see in the city on walls and buildings, along with the gold to represent electricity and sun. Also below are two sketches from my new recycled paper sketchbook. I love the texture of it :3

Solronté, Dragon of the Shining City

Sketches! Pyramid Head and New Pokemon

During the last couple weeks I've had limited mobility due to an infection in my foot... so I did some sketching! These are all done in pencil, scanned and color added in Photoshop or Sai.


I love Pyramid Head but I thought I'd try a more monster-like creature with the helmet instead.

Just something as a break between commissioned work.

This is Klump from Donkey Kong Country and I love him ;W ; he's my favorite forever, I mean FOREVER. I wanna lay on his belly |3 I used his color scheme from the TV show instead of the game here.

Just takin' a stroll through the swamp (which I'm surprised how decent the background came out because I'm shit at "painting" stuff like that.)

Also I stayed away from my normal pen and watercolor tools for this picture and opted for conte and oil brushes instead. I like the lines better, I don't have to be so fussy.

Well I figure I'll post some sketches I've done recently that I haven't really posted elsewhere. I would post them on my DA and whatnot but I don't have a scanner and it wouldn't look that great presentation-wise. :/ Unfortunately I'll have to deal until I can get one.

Here's Hypno, the pokemon. I drew this after not drawing anything for myself for quite awhile. Everything got bottled up and I just released it through this picture.

Some big cat I drew on the plane while we were landing. It looks diseased but those are just dumb markings.

More sketches the night after I drew the Hypno. I didn't really think about anything, I just let myself draw whatever. The bottom two were inspired by Heironymous Bosch, my favorite painter/artist, known for his fantastic imagery and "fantasy" paintings.

This is some armored lizard dude I drew on the plane. I don't really like it but that's because I just did a one-shot without any planning.

New Blog!

Welp. It's that time. I've decided to make a blogspot for my adventures through second year at Sheridan animation. I should have done this last year but OH WELL better late than never. I'll also be posting sketches, doodles, WIPs and whatever else.

I also have a Tumblr blog, but I reblog all sorts of stuff on there. Funny pictures, videos, music and other stuff of interest (feel free to follow me there too) so this blog will be entirely focused on animation and my artwork.
